The work done in March provides the foundations for this year’s harvest. Spring Cereals grow from seed to maturity in approximately 120 days and the old saying “well sown is half grown” is still as important as ever.
That product, fed in combination with Quinn’s 17% Calf Follow-On ration, has resulted in calves weaning two weeks earlier, at 10 weeks.
The time is fast approaching to sow spring crops for Harvest 2018. As always Quinns are stocking a wide range of cereal and bean varieties from the Department of agriculture recommended lists. It is important not only to choose the right crop but also the right variety for your farm.
Following the recent completion of an additional state of the art feed pelleting plant Quinns can now offer a comprehensive range of quality nuts alongside coarse rations. The new feed plant is accredited under the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS) and all grain purchased is from Irish Grain Assurance Scheme (IGAS) approved growers.
Heifer Rearing – Key Targets and Planning, Replacement heifers are the future of every dairy herd. Now that we are in non-quota era, the long term nancial penalties of a poor heifer rearing programme are crippling. The net cost of rearing a replacement heifer on your farm is estimated to be approximately €1,500 per head by Teagasc. A heifer that calves down at 30 months will cost the farmer an extra €400 per head for that delay of 6 months, these costs spiral out of control when you start looking at multiples so therefore it’s important to keep to a rm plan.
