Dairy Management Advice

Dairy
High producing dairy cows will have a higher requirement for energy than they are capable of obtaining from their diet. In order to bridge this gap, the cow will mobilise some of her body reserves. The key to early lactation management of the dairy cow is to minimise this negative energy balance and the subsequent loss of body condition. With the correct diet formulation, feeding a high energy, high dry matter diet, we can optimise the dairy cow’s intake. By minimising negative energy balance and body condition loss, we can help decrease incidence of any associated fertility and health problems such as mastitis or ketosis.

Feeding high levels of concentrated supplements in early lactation will ensure that your dairy cow achieves maximum peak yield, which should result in higher lactation yields. However, the proportion of roughage in the total diet should not be allowed to fall below 35%. Essential to optimising intake is the supply of sufficient feed space for every cow (40-50cm), clean troughs, fresh feed and fresh water. It is also important to test the basal forage (forage beet, maize or grass silage) for protein and digestibility, so we can accurately formulate complete diets.

Milk Yield (Gallons) CP% in Diet (Dry Matter Basis) Cow fed on 14% silage needs 6kg ration at
<4 15% 18% CP
4-5 16-17% 18% CP
6-7 17-17.5% 21% CP
>7 18% 24% CP

yea-sacc

Yea-Sacc® is a live yeast culture manufactured by Alltech, that has been proven to optimise rumen function by reducing variations in rumen pH. Research has shown increases in dry matter intake and improvements in milk yield (+1.7 litres) and composition from increased feed efficiency.

In controlling body condition loss, further research with Yea-Sacc1026 has demonstrated between five and seven less open days or more cows pregnant at 200 days following this reduction in animal stress.Altech’s Bioplex® Copper provides trace mineral nutrition in a form as close to nature as possible. Bioplex Copper is better able to meet the higher nutrient needs of modern livestock for rapid growth, maximum reproductive efficiency and animal health.

sel-plex

Sel-Plex® is an organic form of selenium yeast produced by Alltech.

Sel-Plex is the most proven form of organic selenium. With 18 years of research, Sel-Plex has been shown to support fertility and calf survival. It also improves immune function, resulting in lower somatic cell counts and susceptibility to diseases such as mastitis.

Lactation preparation feeds

Achieving optimum live weight at first calving of 540-580kg at 23-25 months can provide savings in future years in terms of improved reproductive performance and reduced incidence of disease. Quinns have formulated a ration to promote maximum growth rates so breeding and growth targets are achieved.

Four Seasons Heifer Rearer Ration

Four Seasons Pre-Calver Ration

Four Seasons

Quinns have formulated a high energy pre-calver ration that will promote maximum production throughout the cow’s lactation. The feeding of a pre-claver ration for two weeks before calving will prime the dry cow’s rumen for milk production, ensure it is adapted to the feeding of concentrates, reduce the risk of metabolic diseases and promote higher intakes post-calving.

  • 20% high quality protein
  • Includes high-spec pre-calver minerals and vitamins
  • High cereal starch level to prime the rumen for lactation
  • A feeding rate of 2 kg/day to prepare the dairy cow for lactation.
